Portland’s Perfect Paths

My family spends a good number of weekends every year out on the trail. It’s nice to get outside after spending most of our time staring at a screen during the week!

Here are some of our favorite hiking spots.

Powell Butte Nature Reserve

Located in southeast Portland, Powell Butte Nature Park offers over eight miles of trails that are perfect for families. The paths wind through meadows and forests, showcasing native plants like Douglas firs and bigleaf maples. The gentle inclines make it manageable for little ones, and the summit provides panoramic views of majestic peaks such as Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. The kids are fascinated by the pipes and mini-museum showcasing the local flora and the 50-million-gallon underground reservoirs, integral to Portland’s water supply, that lie under the park.

Wahkeena Trail

Starting near Wahkeena Falls, this trail offers a moderately challenging hike that my kids find adventurous yet achievable. The path ascends alongside cascading waters, leading us through lush forest adorned with ferns and wildflowers. Along the way, we often pause to admire the views of the Columbia River and the intricate stonework from bygone eras. The trail’s connection to the larger network in the Columbia River Gorge provides ample opportunities to explore and learn about the area’s rich natural history. We hiked 6 miles of trail here on a whim one day, and could have hiked many more.

Latourell Falls

Within Guy W. Talbot State Park, the 2.1-mile loop trail around Latourell Falls is a family favorite. The trail meanders through dense foliage, crosses charming wooden bridges, and follows Henderson Creek, leading to both the lower and upper falls. The surrounding area is rich in native plant life, offering teachable moments about the local ecosystem. We have seen many Trillium over the course of hiking this loop.

Silver Falls State Park

Heading a bit further afield, Silver Falls offers the renowned Trail of Ten Falls. While the full 7.5-mile loop is a bit too lengthy for our younger children, shorter segments still provide breathtaking waterfall views and forest air. After our hikes, we enjoy visiting the Historic South Falls lodge, where friendly volunteers share insights about the park’s flora and fauna. The Friends of Silver Falls Nature Store offers nature-based merchandise and local artisan crafts, with proceeds supporting the educational programs and special projects.

Wahclella Falls

This 2.4-mile out-and-back trail is great for adventurous families. The path leads us through a slot canyon along Tanner Creek, culminating in the awe-inspiring sight of Wahclella Falls. The relatively easy terrain, combined with the lush surroundings and the sound of rushing water, makes it a delightful experience for both adults and children. It’s common for us to pass by other parents with young children on our hike. We like to catalog the native plants and local wildlife, adding to the adventure.

A Villanelle for Oregon Trails

In Oregon’s embrace, where wonders call,
Powell Butte’s trails weave through the open land.
Wahkeena’s path ascends by waterfall.

Latourell’s cascade, a graceful, silken wall,
Silver Falls’ tenfold splendors grand.
In Oregon’s embrace, where wonders call.

Wahclella’s misty veil, a tranquil sprawl,
Sword ferns carpet paths, a verdant strand.
Wahkeena’s path ascends by waterfall.

Each step reveals the forest’s whispered thrall,
Moss-clad trees in emerald stands.
In Oregon’s embrace, where wonders call.

Sunlight dances, casting shadows tall,
Upon the trails with lovers hand in hand.
Wahkeena’s path ascends by waterfall.

These sacred places, memories enthrall,
Preserved in hearts, a timeless band.
In Oregon’s embrace, where wonders call,
Wahkeena’s path ascends by waterfall.
